Herring butter appetizer is easy and fast to make. And with the help of a blender, you can make pasta spread in minutes. Herring butter is a great option for snacks, breakfasts, and table snacks. In the old days, herring butter was sold in the convenience department and we sometimes bought it. But that butter is a little different than my recipe. There's more butter, there's more herring. As for the eggs, I doubt they were there, but carrots, that's for sure. I found the recipe on the Internet. It was very delicious, especially with the thin crispy bread "Generous".

Ingredients for Brezhnev's herring butter


  • Breads (TM "Generous") - 1 package.
  • Butter (I have 50 grams - soft, room temperature) - 100 g
  • Herring (filet) - 200 g
  • Chicken egg (boiled) - 2 pcs
  • Carrot (small) - 1 pc
  • Garlic - 1 clove
  • Mustard (cooked) - 2 teaspoon
  • Dill - 2 sprigs.
  • Salt

How to cook Brezhnev herring butter step by step with photos


1. Take out the butter (I have 50g) from fridge beforehand, it has to be soft. Boil eggs and carrots until soft, cool, peel and cut into random pieces.

2. Clean the herring, remove all bones and skin. Cut the fillets into free-form pieces and put them in a bowl. I have herring fillets in wine sauce in a jar.

3. Add the table mustard and garlic to the herring. Coarsely chop the garlic.

4. Add carrots and eggs to the herring. If you don't have canned herring, add the ground pepper.

5. Pour sauce from a herring jar into a bowl. Mince the ingredients with a blender to create a smooth paste. If the fish is not too salty, you can add more salt to taste. Put herring butter in the fridge for 1 hour to cool. Serve the butter with chopped dill on top. Delicious!

6. To go with the herring butter, I recommend thin, crusty breads "Generous". Very tasty! Bon appetit!
