A very tasty and easy to prepare herring! Serve it with vegetables directly to the potatoes or as a snack. Recipe taken from Elena Kalinina, with my small changes. Thanks to her!

Ingredients for herring dutch:


  • Herring (salted) - 1 pc
  • Shallots - 3 pcs
  • Carrots - 1 pc
  • Vegetable oil (TM Oleina) - 6 tablespoon
  • Lemon - 3 dol.
  • Bay leaf - 2 pieces
  • Parsley - 1/3 bunch.
  • Sugar - 1 teaspoon
  • Allspice - 5 pcs

How to cook herring Dutch step by step with photos


Peel and fillet the herring and cut into chunks as in the photo

Peel and slice onion and carrot into rings. Prepare the oil, bay leaf and lemon and parsley.

At the bottom of a 750 ml jar, put some of the onions and carrots.

Then part of the herring.

Top with lemon, bay leaf, pepper, peppercorns and a little sugar.

Repeat layers until the herring and vegetables are done.

Pour oil on everything and leave in fridge for 2 days. Turn upside down a couple of times and leave in the fridge, then upside down, then in the normal position.
