Ingredients for home style herring:

  • Fish (small herring) - 500 g
  • Red onion (Crimean) - 1 pc
  • Carrot - 1 pc
  • Lemon - 1/2 pc
  • Salt - 4 teaspoon
  • Sugar - 3 teaspoon
  • bay leaf (small) - 10 units
  • Black pepper (grind coarsely) - 10 pcs

How to cook herring step by step with photos

Wash herring and if desired, clean it and cut the heads off. I like to peel the fish when eating, so I left it in one piece. Cut the onion in half rings, the lemon - thinly, grate the carrot on a Korean grater. Prepare 2 half-liter jars for fish.

On the bottom of the jar lay out little by little onion, carrot, lemon, bay leaf, sprinkle with sugar and salt by 1/2 tsp, pepper and lay a layer of herring. Repeat the layers, put them tightly until everything is done.

We put the lid on, shake the jar a little, and put it in the fridge for a couple of days.
