Tonight is Old New Year's Eve according to the old calendar! Many people ignore this holiday, thinking that the New Year is the New Year, and there shouldn't be any old New Year anymore. But Russians like to have fun, so many people celebrate this holiday just like the New Year! In the Penza region (and maybe in many others) there is a very merry tradition:
Adults dress up as much as they can, paint their faces or wear masks, and with songs they walk through the yards, singing carols, and the hosts, after listening to the sonorous chants, must treat the dressed up guests with something - give candy, cookies, gingerbread, and who lives poor, they can serve an onion or a vegetable of some kind! Usually adults do not want such presents, for them, you see, they can have some moonshine... And if they don't have any, they'll give them money... And if they don't like something, they, the mischievous ones, can even fuck up, for example - break the fence, or even worse - break the window! So hostesses try to splurge, so as not to inadvertently make trouble!
So I prepared for all sorts of surprises - changed the money, baked gingerbread, and last night baked my family a delicious snack cake "New Year's style", which, not having waited for the holiday, was already tried yesterday, at twelve o'clock in the morning!
So now I'm sitting and thinking, why not buy some home brew (as we call moonshine), well, to be on the defensive, to save the sin....
